# Overview

Zeratul is one of the most important Protoss characters in the StarCraft universe. A Dark Templar and powerful psionic warrior, he is known for his stealth abilities, wisdom, and willingness to act independently when necessary. Zeratul plays a central role throughout the events of both StarCraft and StarCraft II.

# Background

Born among the Nerazim, also known as the Dark Templar, Zeratul rejected the Khala, the communal psionic link followed by most Protoss. Because of this, the Nerazim were exiled from Aiur around 200BCE.

During the Zerg invasion of Aiur, Zeratul reluctantly allied with Tassadar and the Khalai Protoss to combat the growing threat. His actions helped unite divided Protoss factions during one of the darkest periods in their history.

# Role in StarCraft

Zeratul became famous for assassinating the Cerebrate Zasz. While this victory proved the Dark Templar could permanently kill cerebrates, it also accidentally allowed the Overmind to discover the location of Aiur through Zeratul's thoughts.

Despite this mistake, Zeratul continued to fight against the Zerg and later aided Kerrigan, Jim Raynor, and other factions when their goals aligned.

# Role in StarCraft II

In StarCraft II, Zeratul searches for ancient knowledge concerning the prophecy of the Xel'Naga and the rise of Amon. He uncovers warnings about future galactic destruction and repeatedly attempts to guide Artanis and Raynor toward preventing it.

His missions often focus on ancient ruins, forbidden knowledge, and visions of possible futures. Zeratul ultimately sacrifices himself during the events of Legacy of the Void to help Artanis resist Amon's corruption.

# Abilities and Traits

Zeratul is known for several signature abilities:

- Permanent cloaking through advanced Dark Templar stealth technology.
- Exceptional psionic combat skill.
- Tactical patience and intelligence.
- Deep knowledge of Protoss history and Xel'Naga lore.

He is frequently portrayed as calm, mysterious, and philosophical compared to many other military leaders in the series.

# Legacy

Zeratul remains one of the most recognizable Protoss heroes in StarCraft. His actions shaped the survival of the Protoss species and the eventual defeat of Amon. Fans often remember him for his cryptic dialogue, stealth gameplay, and tragic but heroic sacrifice.
