# Overview & Requirements

The **Control Centre/Financial/Billing** console offers a Surgical Modifier (**Surg. Modifier**) field.

This field allows a surgeon or surgeon's administrator to record a Surgical Modifier value when submitting surgical procedure service codes to Medical Billing Services.

## Requirements

- The Profile version is 9.0.12.2 or later.
- The **Health System/Province **is set to "New Brunswick".

# Surgical Modifier Field

## Purpose

The Surgical Modifier is required to ensure accurate billing and compliance with specific reimbursement policies in New Brunswick. The field captures critical details about the nature of surgical procedures, which helps in differentiating between cases where multiple procedures are performed. This information directly affects how Medicare calculates reimbursement rates, enabling appropriate compensation based on the level of surgical complexity.

## Location

The Surgical Modifier (**Surg. Modifier**) field is set in the **Control Centre/Financial/Billing** console.

## Valid Values

The **Surg. Modifier **field has two valid values:

1. SAME INCISIONIndicates that the procedures were performed through the same surgical entry point.
2. DIFFERENT INCISIONIndicates that additional incisions were made to perform other procedures.
