# Article Overview & Feature Requirements

When patients arrive with prescriptions from an external provider, a provider on site with prescribing privileges enters the prescription into Profile, indicating that the prescription is external as well as who the provider is, and either sends the prescription to a pharmacy or fulfills the prescription on site, where inventory is available. This article describes how this is done.

It is intended for clinical users.

## Feature Requirements

- Profile 10.0.2 or later
- Go to **Organisation/Preferences/General/Scripts and Instructions**. On the **Interface **tab,** **ensure that the **Show Prescriber fields in Usual Scripts and Prior Scripts **checkbox is selected.

# Add a New External Prescription

This action can be performed in one of the following places:

- Medical Record/Prescriptions/Prior Scripts
- New Encounter/Scripts/Prior Scripts

Go to **Medical Record/Prescriptions/Prior Scripts** or **New Encounter/Scripts/Prior Scripts**:

Click on the **Add new external prescription **button:

In the formulary window, enter search terms for the applicable medication into the search field and click the **Rx **button or press **Enter** to search.

Select the correct prescription medication and click **OK**.

Next, in the expanded Formulary window, in the **Prescriber **field:

- Either select 'External' from the drop-down for an external prescription and select an external provider from those stored in the list of External Providers in Profile (as shown in the screenshot below)
- Or select 'Text' and enter the prescriber's name as free text (if they are not in the list of External Providers in Profile).

Click **OK **to save the prescription.

**Note: **Prescriber fields are available only if the preference **Show Prescriber fields in Usual Scripts and Prior Scripts** is enabled.

## View an External Prescription

If you go to **Medical Record/Prescriptions/Prior Scripts**, and if you have the **Prescriber **column selected in the **Medications Filters** (accessible via the **Edit **button on the right), you will be able to see the external provider you have entered in the **Prescriber **field for that prescription (whether selected from the list in Profile or entered as free text).
