# Article Overview

This article provides instructions for setting up and using the BC Controlled Prescription Form in Profile. It is intended for clinical users, as well as System Administrators or technical users.

# Form Overview

In British Columbia, prescriptions for controlled drugs must be written on a Controlled Prescription Program duplicate prescription pad. Alternatively, there is now a printer-friendly version of this duplicate prescription pad which can be ordered from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC, see more details here: [Prescription pad FAQ \_ College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC](https://www.cpsbc.ca/registrants/programs/drug-programs/cpp/rx-pad/emr-faq)

This printer-friendly version can be used with Profile by using the attached Form template.

## How to set up the BC Controlled Prescription Form

1. Download the attached Form Template jaffa file.
2. In Profile, go to **Organization / Import & Export / Import Jaffa File**.
3. Choose the Form Template jaffa file and click **Open**.

## How to use the BC Controlled Prescription Form

1. While in an Encounter, add a medication to the current order.
2. Go to the Forms view in the Action list below and search for the **BC Controlled Prescription Form**.
3. When the form opens, select the **Prescription **from the drop-down at the top.
4. Insert a printer-friendly Controlled Prescription sheet into the tray of your printer.
5. Click **Print**.
6. Sign both halves of the printed prescription.
7. Tear the Controlled Prescription sheet along the perforation in the middle and give the pharmacy half to the patient to take to the pharmacy.
8. Keep the duplicate half for your records as required by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. You may choose to keep this as physical paper or scan this into Profile and destroy the physical paper.

## Notes

- The printer-friendly Controlled Prescription sheets provided by the CPSBC are 8.5" x 5.5", about the same width as a normal sheet of printer paper but half the height. It is intended to be used in any printer without a special need to supporting different paper sizes, but some printers may be better than others at keeping the sheet straight as it prints. There may be some skewing of the patient and prescription details on the form due to this.
- Profile does not save copies of this Form in the patient's medical record. It's intended to allow printing prescriptions onto the printer-friendly sheets as required rather than serve as a record of the prescription. The prescription
- Profile is not able to distinguish controlled prescriptions from other prescriptions or which medications require a controlled prescription. It is up to the provider to use this form when appropriate and keep a record of the controlled prescription.
