eprescribing (via erx) electronic prescribing (eprescriptions) is an australian digital health agency initiative that allow patients to receive a token of their script in a digital format either by phone or email eprescriptions are designed to be convenient and improve patient safety and care, reducing the risk of adverse drug events, such as those caused by input errors during dispensing more prescription information between prescribers and pharmacists this article describes the requirements to activate eprescribing and workflow changes made in profile to incorporate eprescribing mechanisms it assumes prior knowledge of the workflows involved when creating and printing prescriptions in profile new requirements upgrade to profile version 8 7 8 or higher digital certificate (this is the same certificate issued for medicare pki) customers must be registered with erx at https //www erx com au/register/ https //www erx com au/register/ and have erx install and configure the adapter using the digital certificate above eprescribing licensed module and emessage service enabled by intrahealth auto log off security preference must be applied and cannot exceed 10 minutes ad integration must be switched off to use eprescribing prescribers must have an hpi i entered in profile organisations must have an hpi o applied to the prac or pos record intrahealth sms solution is required to send sms tokens email integration with profile must be configured to email tokens directly to a pharmacy email tokens to patients are delivered via erx and do not require email integration changes to prescription instruction the following changes have been made to the new/edit instruction line the interval (days) field is used to enter the minimum number of days required between repeats the dispensed checkbox is used to indicate this is an owed script that should be sent to the pharmacy that dispensed the medication owed prescriptions are those which are dispensed to patients at the request of the prescriber before the actual prescription is received by the pharmacy, typically for an emergency supply of medication items marked as dispensed must be sent separately to other order items refer to the note above for email tokens the active script list checkbox is used to indicate if the prescribed item shall be uploaded to the patients active script list (asl) by erx, if the patient has one the endorsement button opens the select endorsements window prescribers can apply additional information to accompany the prescription some medications require maximum quantity authorised (in words) to be entered profile will notify users of this automatically if it is missing configuration patient the default preference for eprescribing is configured from the eprescribing token dropdown field in the connectivity panel of the internet view of the alter patient window, where print , email or sms can be selected pharmacy the default preference for eprescribing is a new field in the reference view of the edit external provider window for the pharmacy in the preferred etoken method dropdown field, select print , email or sms eprescription sending sending an eprescription is seamlessly integrated into the current prescribing workflow a provider creates an order as they usually would and selects a pharmacy, if applicable click esend in the order items toolbar the eprescription preview for \[patient] window opens full details of all the values applied to the prescription are displayed for all orders being sent, allowing the prescriber to preview all information prior to finalizing the prescription if the patient has no preferred etoken method, the default action is print etoken method preference change in the details panel of the eprescription preview for \[patient] window, press at the end of the patient preference field this opens the change token address window 2 select the sms or email radio button enter the phone number or email address to be used for the token(s) if the patient record should be updated with the mobile number or email address entered, check the update patient mobile or update patient email checkbox, respectively press ok to save the changes and close the window in the evidence of prescription panel, select the required radio button to determine how the patient should receive their token if there is no supplier chosen, the send direct to pharmacy option will be greyed out press send if a schedule 8 medicine is being prescribed, the prescriber will need to enter their password to authorize the prescription patient viewing of an eprescription when sending an eprescription, the patient will receive a token in the format selected under the evidence of prescription panel send direct to pharmacy in this instance, the patient receives no evidence of prescription and must go to the selected pharmacy to receive their prescription print if the evidence of prescription is printed, the letter will appear in the format below sms if the evidence of prescription is sent via sms, the patient will receive an sms containing a link to the prescription token email if the evidence of prescription is sent via email, the patient will receive an email containing a link to the prescription token pharmacy viewing of an eprescription send direct to pharmacy depending on the preferred etoken method of the pharmacy, the pharmacy will receive a printout of the prescription, or a token by sms or email if the prescription is an owed prescription, the pharmacy shall be sent the token to reconcile their records eprescription modification prescriptions cannot be edited after submission if there is a need to edit the prescription after submission, the prescription must be cancelled and a new prescription generated eprescription reprint reprinting evidence of an eprescription is done via prior scripts select the script item to be printed click in the prior script tab toolbar this opens the resend evidence of prescription window if the prescription was given to a patient or the resend to pharmacy window if the prescription was sent directly to a pharmacy select the appropriate radio button for the method of regenerating the evidence of prescription token and press ok resending a prescription that has been sent directly to a pharmacy can only be resent to a pharmacy or printed eprescription cancellation or cessation cancelling or ceasing an eprescription is done via the prior scripts tab when cancelling a prescribed medication, profile will send a cancellation for the prescription and any further repeats for prescribed items with no repeats, only the icon is active if a prescribed medication has been dispensed with any repeats still available, profile has no knowledge of the repeat prescription(s) in this case, ceasing a prescription is used to send a cancellation for any further dispenses of the medication for prescribed items that have been dispensed but were prescribed with repeats, only the icon is active select the script item to be cancelled click or in the prior scripts tab toolbar, then press yes in the dialog box that appears press ok in the confirmation dialog box that appears the erx status of the that prescription line will now display as cancelled or ceased audit log an audit log of outgoing eprescription messages is available in control centre/manage/outgoing messages selecting one or more log entries will enable the toolbar icon to export the full prescription details, to verify that they are correct or for audit purposes
